Sending Hope To Ukraine
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine. In the weeks since, the world has watched the devastating footage as Russia bombards the major cities in Ukraine with seemingly no end in sight. In light of this military invasion, we’re taking a look at the response by FedEx and UPS regarding shipments to and from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus and investigating whether packages sent to other European countries will be adversely affected.
Can I send packages to Ukraine, Russia, or Belarus?
No. Both UPS and FedEx have suspended shipments to and from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. FedEx released the following statement, announcing their suspension of service to Russia and Belarus, “We are deeply disturbed by what is happening in Ukraine, and our thoughts and solidarity are with the people affected by this ongoing violence. Our top priority is the safety of our team members and their families, and we are providing direct financial assistance to them and the affected communities.”
Will this affect packages sent to other European countries?
Possibly. At this time, you can send packages to other European countries through FedEx or UPS, but you may experience increased shipping costs and delays not covered by service guarantees. As of February 24, “The Money Back Guarantee is currently suspended for all FedEx Express services in Europe until further notice.”
In addition, FedEx announced new peak surcharges for international destinations in response to supply chain disruptions and limited air cargo capacity. On parcel exports from Europe to the US and Canada, surcharge rates are increasing from €0.09/pound to €0.14/pound.
I sent a package to one of these countries, what now?
If you had a package in transit to Ukraine, Russia, or Belarus at the time of the invasion, your package is likely on its way back to you. According to the UPS website, “packages in transit that cannot be delivered will be returned free of charge to the sender where possible.”
Ukrainians are in need of supplies, and while you can’t send aid through FedEx or UPS, there are still ways to help. Here are two organizations providing support to Ukrainians right now:
Care.org’s Ukraine Crisis Fund aims to reach 4 million with immediate aid and recovery, food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support, and cash assistance — prioritizing women and girls, families, and the elderly.
